   The Paper in the Woods

   Mira finds a contract pinned to a tree behind her grandmother's house. The signature line is already half-filled in her own handwriting.

   She signs. The ink is still wet at sunrise.

   Three Months Later

   Mira's debut single hits #1. The radio interviewer is the only one who doesn't applaud at the end.

   The interviewer slides a copy of the contract across the table.

   The Arena

   Mira's biggest show. The lights cut. From the orchestra pit, a tall figure in a black tuxedo applauds slowly.

   He bows. 'Interest is due at midnight.'

   The Witch

   Mira finds the only person who's read this contract before — a blood-witch the diocese excommunicated in 1962.

   The Dive Bar

   Mira goes back to the bar where she first sang. The patrons remember a different name. Her face is on the wall under it.

   Mira sneaks into the county morgue. There IS a body. It has her face. It's been there since before she was born.

   Midnight. The demon arrives at her dressing room. Mira lays out the contract — and the loophole.

   Mira walks on stage. She opens her mouth. Nothing comes out. The audience hears her anyway — and so does she.
